Nagpur man asks teenager to download app on fathers phone; steals Rs 9 lakhs

In a case of online fraud, an unidentified caller allegedly extracted around Rs 9 lakh from a bank account of a man residing in Nagpur, near Koradi Gram Panchayat, after asking the latters 15-year-old son to download an application on his fathers mobile phone.

According to a press release, the victim’s son, Dheeraj Ashok Manghate was using his fathers phone when he received a call from an unknown number on Wednesday at around 3:43 pm. 

The caller introduced himself as Rajesh Sharma and pretended to be a customer care executive from PhonePe. Under the pretext of increasing the credit limit of his fathers PhonePe account, the caller asked the minor to download AnyDesk app.

As soon as the boy downloaded the app, the caller gained access to Manghates State Bank of India (SBI), Koradi branch account, which was linked to his PhonePe account and extracted Rs 8.95 lakh from it.

Following the complaint, a case was registered against the accused at Koradi Police Station under Section 419 (cheating by personation), Section 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act.

Since The Raaas enchanted and enthralled Nagpur with its quality garba in its first year in 2018, the demand for encore has been reverberating the city. To cater to the huge public demand, the organisers of the king of garbas have decided to continue The Raaas next year on. Like its first year, The Raaas Garba will be presented to Nagpur in association with Nation Next in 2023. Mahesh Kukreja, the key organiser said, “Because of some reasons, we, earlier, thought of giving the event a break.”

He added, “Then COVID-19 struck the world. Now we plan to continue it from next year onwards. While I express my gratitude to Nagpurians to make the event a huge hit, I request the city’s garba revellers to not get fooled as a few garbas are falsely claiming to be The Raaas. We’ll be back next year for sure!”
