A 38-year-old man, who owns a beer bar in Nagpur, allegedly attempted to set himself on fire near the private residence of Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Saturday afternoon.
Fortunately, the on duty police, present outside the minister’s house, saved the man.
The man took the extreme step as he was facing financial issues since COVID-19 lockdown. Since he incurred losses, he had started living in a rented house. His landlord had locked the house after the 38-year-old couldn’t pay the house rent for three months.
Police Inspector Atul Sabnis, at Sitabuldi Police Station, said that the man poured kerosene on himself at around 1:30 pm at GPO square in Civil Lines, which is hardly a stone throws distance from Deshmukhs residence.
Soon, cops deployed at Deshmukhs residence rushed to the spot and snatched the kerosene bottle from him and alerted the Police Control Room.
A team of Sitabuldi Police Station immediately reached the spot and took the man into custody. A case of attempt to suicide under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him.
Further investigation into the case is on
