Supreme Court: There should be screening of programs on OTT platforms

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday opined that there should be screening of programs, which are streamed on Over the Top (OTT) platforms like Netflix, Amazon, etc.

The apex court made the remark while hearing an appeal filed by Amazon India’s head Aparna Purohit against Allahabad High Courts order in the ongoing investigation against the web series Tandav. The HC had denied anticipatory bail to Purohit. The court has been adjourned till tomorrow.

Justice Ashok Bhushan instructed senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi as he said, “Please submit the regulations on OTT platforms. We are of the view that there should be some screening of such programs. At times they are showing pornography too.”

A Jodhpur court in Rajasthan on Monday issued notice to filmmaker Prakash Jha and actor Bobby Deol in a case filed against the web series Aashram. While the series has been directed by Jha, Deol plays the central character in it. The next hearing in the case will be held on January 11. 

Advocate Khush Khandelwal, who approached the court against the web series, said that the series, in which Deol plays the role of a saint, portrays Hindu gurus as rapists, corrupt and drug traffickers. Khandelwal said that the series has hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus.
