Nagpur Passport Department officials have seized the passport of Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Vijay Wadettiwar based on a complaint filed by ex-BJP MLC Mitesh Bhangdiya. In his complaint to the court, through counsel Shreerang Bhandarkar, Bhangdiya had claimed that Wadettiwar had hidden the information regarding ten criminal offences against him when he applied for a passport in 2001.
During a court hearing on Thursday, Harshadkumar Parmar, Assistant Passport Officer, said that Wadettiwars passport was impounded under section 10 (3)(e) of the Passports Act, 1967 after he was issued a notice on December 18. Parmar informed that his office has referred the case of police authorities in Nagpur and Gadchiroli along with court copies for verification.
Wadettiwar, however, while speaking to publications denied the accusations while saying that it was the passport offices responsibility to conduct verification properly before issuing the passport. Wadettiwar also asserted that the cases against him were primarily political in nature.
The Brahmapuri MLA also claimed that he himself surrendered the passport after Bhangdiya filed the case. Wadettiwar told a daily: It wasn’t seized as claimed by Bhangdiya. I personally went to the passport office in Seminary Hills to surrender it. Since there are no offences against me currently, I will get it back shortly.
