In a heart-wrenching incident, a jobless couple from West Midnapore district in West Bengal allegedly sold their two-and-a-half-month old baby girl to a distant relative for Rs 3,000.
Before lockdown, while the infants mother used to work as a domestic help, her father was a daily wage earner. Both lost their jobs three months back due to the imposition of lockdown.
The incident came to light on the night of June4 after a team of police officials, accompanied by members of NGO Childline, recovered the baby from the relatives house in Howrah.
While the baby has now been admitted to a government hospital, the parents, identified as Bapan Dhara and Tapasi, are absconding. Anish Chowdhury, sub-divisional police inspector, Ghatal, told New Indian Express that the child was recovered from a couples house who are distant relatives of the parents. After investigation, the police discovered that the child was sold for Rs 3,000.
The first tip-off we received was from Bapans neighbours, who could not find the child anywhere. They did not hear her crying. When we started investigating, we came to know about Bapans distant relatives, a childless couple, said Chowdhury.
The infant would be kept at the hospital for three-four days and after that the child would be sent to a state-run home.
