IIT Hyderabad team develops low-cost testing kit that can detect COVID-19 within 20 minutes

A team of researchers from IIT Hyderabad have developed a first-of-its kind COVID-19 test kit, which can deliver results within 20 minutes of testing. The test kit has been developed at a cost of Rs 550. Researchers are of the opinion that the cost can be further reduced to Rs 350 if the testing kit is produced on a large scale.

Govind Singh (Professor, Electrical Engineering Department of IIT, Hyderabad) who led the three-member team, which developed the kit, told PTI: We have developed a COVID-19 testing kit, which can deliver the results within 20 minutes for symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. The uniqueness of this test kit is that it uses an alternative to the currently used method for testing.

The team conducted clinical trials at ESIC Medical College and Hospital at Hyderabad and sought the approval from Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR). A patent has been filed for the test kit.
