Hislop College’s intercollegiate event ‘Athena Fest 2016-17’ in association with Nation Next as the media partner ended on a high note today. The fest couldn’t have got a perfect ending than today as today is the 154th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand.
Debate it out
The conclusion of Athena Fest 2016-17 started with a debate competition organised by the management team The Athenaeum? and hosted by Swaima Ahmad. The debate competition was judged by Dr Vrushali Kulkarni, Shirin Badar and Manohar Das. The chief guests at the debate competition were Dr Nihal Sheikh (Director, Students Welfare, RTMNU) and Raghuveer Sharma (GM, Vespa). Also present at the competition were Dipti Christian (Principal, Hislop College), Dr Lovely Menachery (Convener, Athena Fest) and Supantha Bhattacharyya (Co-convener, Athena Fest).
A total of 13 contestants from Dr Ambedkar College, Shri Ramdeobaba College of Engineering and Management, GH Raisoni Law School, Govindrao Wanjari College of Law and Hislop College participated in the competition and spoke for and against on the topic – Commercialism is corrupting the standards of art in India.
Each team consisted of two members who spoke for and against the topic and were given five minutes each to debate. While speaking in favour of the topic, a participant gave the example of Baba Ramdevs Patanjali products. Another participant raised a point of how educated people are fooled by misleading advertisements.
While speaking against the topic, a participant gave the example of MF Husain’s painting style over the years. The participant also pointed out that in the past Husain’s painting were sold in lakhs and now they are sold in billions or trillions. A few participants spoke about the rich Indian culture with the help of which many earn their livelihood.
The debate competition was eventually won by Harsh Mahatme and Aishwarya Nandwani who represented Hislop College. They also won the consolation prize. The best speaker award was bagged by Vasundhara Gawande from Dr Ambedkar college and Aadit Ved from GH Raisoni college of Law.
Apart from the debate competition, a prize distribution ceremony also took place wherein winners and runners up from different competitions during the three-day intercollegiate event were rewarded.

Nagpur girl Sanna Suri bags role in Rajnikanth, Aishwarya Rai starrer film ‘Jailer’
Actor Sanna Suri bagged a role in megastar Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer Tamil film ‘Jailer.’ The movie, backed by Sun Pictures, went on floors in August this year. The film that marks Sanna’s debut would hit the theatres next year.
Sanna, who hails from Nagpur, will be seen essaying the role of a police officer named ‘Preeti’ and Rajnikanth’s daughter in the film. While Nelson Dilipkumar co-wrote the script for the action-drama film, filmmaker Anirudh has provided the music for the same.
Sanna Suri in the past has won Miss Maharashtra 2007 and Femina Style Diva beauty pageant titles and has also appeared in Ashok Chakra – Tribute to Real Heroes – a documentary on 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai. Besides, Sanna will also be seen in a biopic of Jaswant Singh Khalra titled ‘Shaheed.’
