This “Rickshawala” effortlessly pulls off burning issues of migrant labourers

Stars: 4/5

Hand-pulled rickshaws have an aesthetic about them; they belong to the British era, says a customer to another at a tea stall in the film Rickshawala? – with Nation Next as media partner. True, the rickshaws do have a special place in people’s heart, as it’s a quintessential reminder of city of joy ? Kolkata.

But, when you see the hand-rickshaw puller plying commuters on the same rickshaw, it breaks the same heart and becomes a grim reminder of penury and hardship.

Set up in the cramped by lanes of Kolkata, the movie starts with main lead ? an unemployed graduate and a hand-rickshaw pullers son ? Manoj Yadav played by Avinash Dwivedi, a migrant from Bihar, trying hard to secure employment in the city.

The film gradually proceeds towards the unfolding of a jobless Manojs troubled love affair with a well-settled Chumki played by Kasturi Chakraborty.

A penury-stricken Manojs father is bed-ridden after suffering an injury on his foot. As a result, Manoj has to desperately arrange money to buy medicines for his ailing father.

The film also revolves around Sangita Sinha who plays the character of Anuradha ? a regular commuter Manoj plies ? along the main lead.

Anuradha is one of those wives in our society, who’s deprived of marital sex ? something, which mainstream Hindi movies barely show. Ram Kamal is the director who shows it unapologetically, unflinchingly.

While Sangita has an incredible screen presence that peaks during an intimate scene, Avinash has mastered his Bihari lingo to the tee. Apart from the plight of the hand-rickshaw pullers, Ram Kamal has successfully brought to the fore the burning issues surrounding migrant labourers.

What makes the narrative beautiful is that a director who’s a Bengali himself has shown the apathy of select Bengalis towards Bihari migrants and rickshaw pullers.

The film beautifully captures the trials and tribulations of a rickshaw puller with music whose lyrics aptly synergise with the story.

Ram Kamal has managed to highlight how hand-rickshaw pullers, whose livelihood depends on ferrying people to and fro regularly, are facing a pecuniary crisis. He shares a grim account of helplessness and desperation that rings true for many like Manoj.
It’s a perfect tribute to great master Bimol Roys masterpiece Do Bigha Zammen? and Roland Joffe’s The City Of Joy. The 100-year-old traditional vehicle of Kolkata that has been declared illegal by the Supreme Court is breathing its last in the by lanes of the city. The film depicts the pathos, love and human bond through the vehicle that keeps the city alive.
The film is set for a release on 30th June 2021 on BIIGGBANG Amusement, a new OTT platform.
