The Union Education Ministry on Wednesday capped the weight of school bags carried by school students under the School Bag Policy 2020. According to the policy, the weight of school bags carried by students from classes I to X should not be more 10 % of the bodyweight of the students. The policy also stated that students of pre-primary classes should carry no school bags at all and that students studying till Class II should not be given any homework at all.
The policy said, School Bag Policy was made in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) and there should be no homework for students up to class II. Homework, which would require less than two hours a week would be allowed for classes III to V and five-six hours a week for classes VI-VIII; 10-12 hours a week would be allowed for classes IX-XII.
The policy further read that every school would need to keep a digital weighing machine on the school premises to measure the weights of the bags. Schools must ensure that mid-day meals are nutritious and sufficient so that students won’t have to carry lunch boxes, the policy added.
Schools across the country would soon re-open after 10 months of being shut due to COVID-19 pandemic. The policy also emphasised on the importance of physical education by allotting more time for sports in school time tables. The Education Ministry had written to states informing them about the changes and suggestions, which should be implemented.
