Ram Navami celebrations in Shanghai by a family from Nagpur

Ram Navami celebrations in China may come as a surprise to people in India, but it’s not at all something new for the Maharashtrian and the Indian community in Shanghai. They have been joining the Waikar family (from Nagpur, Maharashtra, India) for these celebrations since the past eight years ever since the family moved to Shanghai.

Continuing the tradition of hosting Ram Navami celebrations in Shanghai, on March 25, 2018, a Ram Navami pooja was conducted at the Waikar residence. The pooja was conducted as per the religious customs including Rama Janma Pooja, chanting of Ram Janma Shloka in perfect rhythm (with translation in Hindi) followed by swinging the Lord Rama idol in a swing, accompanied by singing the traditional Palna followed by an aarti.

The highlight of the day was, however, Ram Leela staged by an enthusiastic team from the Indian community in Shanghai. Under the guidance of Mukesh Sharma, who impressed the audience with his superb narration in Awadhi language interspersed with Marathi songs, the singers and actors in realistic costumes did an excellent job of keeping the audience (including small kids) of about 120 persons glued to their seats for about 55 minutes. By the time the performance concluded, the audience was left humming to the tunes of Yeh Kahani Ram Ki Sunne Aaye Dur Dur Se Log? from this divine treat on the auspicious occasion of Ramanavami.

Here are some pictures from the Ram Navami celebrations at the Waikar residence in Shanghai:

Special Court grants bail to ex-Home Minister Anil Deshmukh’s son Hrishikesh Deshmukh in money laundering case

Special Court granted bail to former Home Minister of Maharashtra Anil Deshmukh's son Hrishikesh Deshmukh on Monday.

Anil Deshmukh

In a major development, Special Court granted bail to former Home Minister of Maharashtra Anil Deshmukh’s son Hrishikesh Deshmukh on Monday in an alleged money laundering case. Hrishikesh, who was arraigned as an accused in the chargesheet, was granted bail after a special court designated to hear cases related to the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) recorded his appearance.

He had filed an application through his advocate Aniket Nikam after appearing before the court and requesting the same to accept his appearance and grant him bail.

Hrishikesh also pointed out that the accusations in the ED’s case were confined to the alleged acts of omission and commission by his father in his capacity as the former home minister from January 2020 to April 2021. The plea also cited that the former home minister had already been granted bail in the case by the Bombay High Court.

The court had in February this year issued summons to Hrishikesh after ED submitted its complaint (chargesheet) in the case.

Bombay High Court granted bail to NCP leader Anil Deshmukh in October this year in the same case. While Deshmukh had secured the bail in the ED case, he remains in custody in connection with the CBI case registered against him in April last year.
