Abha Pande, independent corporator from Nagpur, on Friday, said that Nagpur Municipal Corporation can save a lot of money by doing proper budget allocations and curbing unnecessary spending.
Pande met NMC Commissioner Radhakrishnan B and requested him to give priority to important projects like sanitization, repairing sewerage networks etc. In a meeting with the commissioner, Pande stressed upon giving importance to urgent matters, which include repair works, replacement of chambers in central Nagpur and sanitation drives amid COVID-19 pandemic.
Stressing on the importance of curbing unnecessary expenses, Pande told Nation Next: In the past, NMC decided to provide transportation to heads of committees, as a result of which, NMC had to rent 80 private cars at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore per year. Heads and corporators are capable to arrange their own personal transportation. Public money should not be wasted on it.
Lashing out at NMC for doing less when it comes to the environment, Pande said: Under Majhi Vasundhara program, to protect the environment, NMC decided to introduce Friday as no vehicle day, which I think was just a photo-op. We can’t save the environment in one day. Constant efforts have to be taken by all of us.
Pande also opined that NMC needs to tap into the commercial potential of the city to increase its revenue. She said, In 2002, NMC released tenders for advertisement at a fixed offset value. The same offset value is even continued today without any considerable raise. Since the last 19 years, the commercial potential of Nagpur has grown. A new tender has to be made to increase revenue for NMC.
