Nagpur’s 8-year-old Sahebrao became world’s first tiger to get an artificial hand on Saturday. The front left paw of the tiger was amputated after it got entangled in a steel trap, which was set by poachers in 2012.
Sahebrao is now at the newly opened Gorewada Rescue Centre in the city. One of the doctors, who treated the tiger, is of the opinion that the procedure is a first in the world. Citys renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr Shushrut Babhulkar along with veterinary doctor Shirish Upadhyay, medical personnel from Maharashtra Animal carried out the operation.
The tiger in 2012 got injured near a waterhole in Palasagaon forest range in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Chandarpur when he was just two-year-old.
When we spoke to Dr Sushrut Babhulkar, who came up with the idea of fitting an artificial limb, said, The surgery, first in the world, was conducted successfully. There were several phases, in which Sahebrao was examined and finally treated. We ensured he goes through pain free procedure.”
