In what could be termed as an extremely unbelievable act, a 32-year-old man named Sonu Sheikh in Nagpur allegedly murdered his eight-month-old daughter and allegedly tried to commit suicide later by slitting his throat using a broken beer bottle during late afternoon on July 16.

Sheikh, a resident of Sakkardara and a driver by profession, had allegedly drowned his eight-month-old daughter in a drum filled with water. Speaking to Nation Next, senior Police Inspector at Sakkardara Police Station, Satyavan Mane said, Sheikh was frustrated over some domestic or financial crisis amid COVID-19. During the afternoon hours of Thursday, he had an argument with his family, following which he drowned the infant in a fit of rage. He later tried to commit suicide by slitting his throat with a broken beer bottle.

Following the incident, nearby locals immediately alerted the police control room. Sakkardara cops then rushed to the spot and sent the infants body and the 32-year-old to citys Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Sheikh is undergoing treatment at GMCH and is on his way to recovery. However, the infant succumbed due to drowning, said Mane.
Further probe is underway, Sheikh has not yet specified a clear reason behind his action since he is under the influence of medicine. He?ll be interrogated further soon after his recovery, added Mane.

An offence against Sheikh has been registered at Sakkardara Police Station under Sections 302 (Murder) and 309 (Attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Reportedly, Sheikh had a quarrel with his wife before the incident.
