Nagpur activists to organize bicycle rally on Republic Day under ‘Save Ajni Vann’ initiative

In order to celebrate an eco-friendly Republic day and protest against felling of around 7,000 trees in Ajni, Nagpur citizens, on January 26th, would participate in a bicycle rally, which will start from RBI Square (Samvidhan Chowk) at reporting time 6.30 am, and end at Railway Men’s School near Ajni Railway Colony.

Covering around 10 km, the bicycle rally would be attended by over 500 environmentalists and city lovers, who would spread the message of Environment conservation under the banner of Save Ajni Vann.
Organisers are a Alliance of Various Organizations, Individuals and Common Citizen’s themselves who have Requested Nagpur citizens to Pledge their allegiance towards environment protection/ conservation and also participate in the Bicycle rally.
Over the past decade, half of the rate of green cover loss in the city is unrecoverable.
Similarly the green areas have decreased by a whopping 33% of what it used to be around 10 years ago. That means one third of what was ?green, is now ?concrete.
At this rate the capacity of the City Environment to clean its air, and maintain a healthy Population will decrease very fast. Various Infrastructural Projects lined up for the next few years for city is going to lead in massive tree felling? to the tune of Nearly one lakh, which many believe is a conservative figure.
The Inter-Modal Station (IMS) project at Ajni is going to require over 7000 age-old trees to be felled in the first phase, which is on 44 acres of land.
Subsequently another over 30,000 trees would be felled in the next two phases, spread over 450 acres. Nagpur cannot afford this environmental shock at this moment as it an irreversible damage. People of Nagpur are standing up to speak against this unsustainable development.
They want Alternatives to be explored and the IMS to be moved to Khapri or other areas where less number of trees would be cut.

On Republic Day, Constitution of India was brought into force, which governs the largest Democracy in the world in terms of population.
Article 51-A( g) of the Indian Constitution, which is the pillar of our Great Democracy deals with Fundamental Duties of the Citizen, states “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment, including forests, lakes, rivers and wild life, to have compassion for the living creatures.
