Nagpur activists, NGOs to organise drive on Dec 20 to protest against felling of trees in Ajni

In order to protest against the felling of thousands of trees for the National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) inter-modal station project at Ajni in Nagpur, several NGOs and Nagpur activists have organized a Signature Drive? at Ajni Vann on Sunday (December 20) at around 8 am under the banner Save Ajni Vann.

Kunal Maurya, one of the organizers of the drive told Nation Next: We are not against development but at what cost is the development happeningAjni is already flooded with traffic and even then, if you look at satellite images, Ajni covers a huge green-patch in the city. Now, the authorities have decided to construct an inter-modal station here, which will result in the felling of these trees.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, being a volunteer made me realize how crucial oxygen is for saving lives. Trees are a major source of oxygen. Ajni is home to thousands of 80 to 100-year-old trees and more than 50 species of birds, he said.

Speaking about other destinations where the project can be executed, Kunal added: It is not that there are no different places in the city where this project can be executed. We suggested six different destinations, which can be a great fit for this project. If the station is built in Khapri, there would be a lot of development in the area. People would start using the metro more and there would be no traffic issues.

Speaking about the drive, Kunal added: We are not only aiming to protect our environment today but also saving it for our future generations. We think that development should be done at places, where it is required. Ajni needs trees at this moment. To risk nature and construct something, which probably would be of not much benefit to the public, is not acceptable.

NHAI, in 2018, had sanctioned the construction of Inter-modal station (IMS) in Nagpur’s Ajni area, which is to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 1,588 crore.

The project is to be executed in two phases. The first phase would involve redevelopment of Ajni Railway Station, bus port, and other connecting facilities. Phase two would involve commercial projects. The total project area is estimated to be around 446 acres.
