Vyankatesh Natya Mandal, Navargaon, recently staged the two-hour Marathi play - Badnaam Rastyacha Sangharsh: Ganga Jamuna - at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall, Civil Lines, Nagpur. The play directed by renowned theatre personality Sadanand Borkar was organized by Sanjay Bharde for helping the Amrapali Utkarsh Sangh. The play brings to light issues like child molestation and trafficking and also stresses upon the need for women empowerment.
The play is based on a true incident and revolves around a male dominated family. The mentally challenged girl in the family is first raped and then married off to her brother-in-law. The girl then ends up in prostitution in Nagpur’s led light area – Ganga Jamuna. Notably, Borkar, the director of play, spent some time in Ganga Jamuna to research for and to write the play. The play, which has had more than 40 shows till now in Chandrapur and Gadchiroli was staged in Nagpur for the first time. All the people who acted in the play are untrained rural people and have been trained by Borkar, who himself plays a pivotal part in the play.
