Man behind Bajirao Mastani’s ‘Mohe rang do laal,’ Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj passes away

Pandit Birju Maharaj, the doyen of Lucknow Gharana of Kathak, died in the early hours of Monday at his Delhi residence. He would have been 84 next month.

‘Maharajji,’ as he was popularly known, died in the presence of his family and disciples. His granddaughter Ragini Maharaj told PTI that the family was playing antakshari? after dinner when he suddenly fell ill.

Ragini said, “Maharaj had been suffering from a kidney ailment and was under dialysis treatment. He probably died of a cardiac arrest.We took him to the hospital immediately but we could not save him.”

Cinema buffs would remember him for the two period dance sequences in Satyajit Ray’s historical drama ‘Shatranj Ke Khiladi’ (for which he sang as well), ‘Kaahe Chhed Mohe’ track picturised on Madhuri Dixit in the 2002 version of ‘Devdas’ and ‘Mohe Rang Do Laal track picturised on Deepika Padukone in 2015 for Bajirao Mastani.

KK passed away at the age of 53 in Kolkata

Renowned playback singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, passed away at the age of 53 in Kolkata. The singer performed at Nazul Mancha auditorium on Tuesday (May 31). He went to his hotel after his performance and collapsed. He was rushed to Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) at around 10:30 pm, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors. The exact cause of his death is unknown as of now.

Shane Warne

Shane Warne, the legendary Australian spinner, passed away at the age of 52 after suffering a suspected heart attack, his management has confirmed.

A statement by the managenent read: “Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived. The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”

More details are awaited.
