Kerala floods: CM issues red alert after death toll reaches 67; Kochi airport suspends operations till Saturday

After the torrential rains that created havoc in Kerala, that claimed almost 67 lives, Chief Minister of the state Pinarayi Vijayan issued a red alert across the state. Cochin International Airport too suspended its operations till Saturday (August 18, 2018) to avoid further inconvenience to people.
The airport authorities assured that they’re working hard to drain out the floodwater. The state for the first time opened 33 out of 39 dams to bring the situation under control. So far, more than one lakh people have been rescued in the state. The Indian Meteorological Department also issued a red alert for Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Malappuram, Palakkad, Idukki and Ernakulam districts till Thursday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too while addressing Indians on the 72nd Independence Day today, said, Many parts of the nation witnessed a good monsoon but at the same time, several parts of India have been affected by flooding. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives due to floods in various parts of India.
Modi on his twitter handle wrote, Had a detailed discussion with Kerala CM Shri Pinarayi Vijayan regarding the unfortunate flood situation in the state. Centre stands firmly with the people of Kerala and is ready to provide any assistance needed. @CMOKerala?
Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor, Congress MP of Thiruvananthapuram on his Twitter handle wrote, The flood situation here in Kerala is really bad. The national media coverage has been grossly inadequate compared to the gravity of the situation here. It is a sad reflection of the truism that the farther you are from Delhi, the less you matter in today’s India. ?pic.twitter.com/bohOK9jpda

Anil Deshmukh granted permission to travel outside Mumbai

Ex-Home Ministe Anil Deshmukh on Monday was granted permission to travel outside Mumbai for four weeks by a special court on Monday.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Home Minister of Maharashtra Anil Deshmukh on Monday was granted permission to travel outside Mumbai for four weeks by a special court on Monday. Deshmukh had sought permission to visit his constituency, which is also his hometown, Nagpur.
The application was filed by Deshmukh through his lawyer, Inderpal Singh, stating that he is a native of Nagpur with deep family roots in the city apart from being an elected representative of his constituency.
“The applicant craves a benevolent indulgence of this court to permit him to travel outside Greater Mumbai, including District Nagpur, for a limited duration of about four weeks so as to maintain continuity in his social and family ties and also visit his original and permanent home/constituency,” the plea stated.
The plea further added that “the applicant needs to have due legal consultation with his lawyers in New Delhi for further course of strategy in the present and connected cases.”
