I will commit suicide if extradited to India: Nirav Modi

Fugitive Nirav Modi, who’s wanted in India in connection with Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering case, has said that he will commit suicide if he is extradited to India. Modi asserted that he would not get a fair trial in India. Modi made the statement after the Westminster Magistrates court rejected his fifth bail plea on Wednesday.
49-year-old Modi’s bail plea, which was filed by his barrister Hugo Keith QC, was rejected by the judge despite the security amount being doubled to four million pounds (approximately Rs 36 core) and an offer to be on house arrest. The next hearing is slated to take place on December 4.
Keith claimed that Modi had been beaten in prison twice in April and most recently on Tuesday. Keith said, Just after 9 am yesterday (Tuesday), two inmates entered his cell and while holding the door shut, punched him, pushed him to the floor, kicked him and made extortion attempts on him while he was on the phone to a colleague. It was a targeted attack probably brought about by the renewed media coverage. Keith asserted that the term of ?billionaire diamantaire? given to Modi by media will lead to more such assaults.
Nirav Modi was arrested by Scotland Yard on March 19 this year in connection with the PNB fraud case and is currently lodged in Wandsworth Prison in south-west London. Along with Modi, Mehul Choksi is also a main accused in the case. Choksi also fled India in January this year.
