Ganeshutsav festivities in Nagpur are expected to be a low-key affair this year as many mandals have voluntarily cancelled their programmes due to the COVID-19. NMC also denied permissions to some mandals in some areas, citing them to be COVID-19 hotspots.

Nagpur’s prominent Rani Laxmi Nagar Ganesh Utsav Mandal, which installs a brass idol each year on a ground, has already canceled its celebrations this year. As per a report in TOI, the mandal will instead be carrying out the rituals at the basement of a house and aarti will be performed by only two persons.

Apart from cancelling the large scale celebrations, many mandals have not even applied for installing a pandal. While NMC and Nagpur Police give permission to 1,500 mandals each year for setting up a pandal, this year only 110 mandals have applied for permission.

Earlier, during a meeting, Nagpur Mayor Sandip Joshi had requested Ganeshutsav mandals to keep the celebrations low-key. To avoid the spread of the virus, he appealed them to cancel programmes involving many people.

The Raaas (2018)

Since The Raaas enchanted and enthralled Nagpur with its quality garba in its first year in 2018, the demand for encore has been reverberating the city. To cater to the huge public demand, the organisers of the king of garbas have decided to continue The Raaas next year on. Like its first year, The Raaas Garba will be presented to Nagpur in association with Nation Next in 2023. Mahesh Kukreja, the key organiser said, “Because of some reasons, we, earlier, thought of giving the event a break.”

He added, “Then COVID-19 struck the world. Now we plan to continue it from next year onwards. While I express my gratitude to Nagpurians to make the event a huge hit, I request the city’s garba revellers to not get fooled as a few garbas are falsely claiming to be The Raaas. We’ll be back next year for sure!”
