FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu resigns after long-standing fallout with Lionel Messi

Nearly 20,000 fans signed a petition demanding that Josep Maria Bartomeu should step down.
Josep Maria Bartomeu on Tuesday resigned from his post as FC (Football Club) Barcelona President, along with his board of directors as a consequence of a long-going feud with club captain Lionel Messi – Argentine professional footballer. Bartomeu claimed the Spanish club wanted to join a potential new super league of elite European teams.
Bartomeu, 57, faced increasing resentment since last year due to which, the club started facing massive financial losses and the teams efficiency on the pitch. This came to head after their 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals in August.
He was widely criticised after Messi demanded a transfer following the humiliation he faced during the Champions League and also faced a vote of no confidence from fellow teammates.
The easiest thing after the Champions League was to resign, but one had to take decisions amid an unprecedented global crisis, he said.
After accepting the proposal for the club to play in a future European Super League, Bartomeu explained that it ?would guarantee the financial stability of the club
Back in August, Messi had handed over an official notice to Barca to terminate his contract before the beginning of the season, as he never wanted to face a legal battle with the club.
After deciding to give it another chance and play for the season, Messi continued to have public fallout with Bartomeu when during an interview he described his stewardship of the club as a ?disaster.
Recently, the club has appointed their former player Ronald Koeman as manager in the close season, but Barca continues to witness a downfall as they have only won two of their five opening league games and lost 3-1 at home to rivals Real Madrid on Saturday.

A day after India lost the test cricket series to South Africa (1-2), Virat Kohli stepped down as the test captain of India on Saturday (January 15). Kohli made the announcement through a social media post.
Kohli’s statement read: “It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. He added: “There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief. I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team.”
Kohli also thanked the BCCI as he wrote: “”I want to thank BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more importantly to all the teammates who bought into the vision for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation.”
