EXCLUSIVE: Govt. may impose curfew in Nagpur to contain surge in COVID-19 cases

?As COVID-19 cases rise to 2203 in Nagpur, Maharashtra government might implement curfew in the city from July 15 to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

Highly placed sources in the state government on the condition of anonymity told Nation Next, People in Nagpur aren’t following COVID-19 norms the way they should be following. There is a surge in cases. This is going to be a proper curfew. The final decision on the same would be taken tomorrow or day after tomorrow in the presence of Commissioner of Police Dr BK Upadhyay, Nagpur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe and Guardian Minister of Nagpur Dr Nitin Raut.”

A highly placed official in Nagpur Police on the condition of anonymity said the curfew would be imposed in the city if NMC Commissioner gives us an official note to implement the same. Majority of the police personnel has been deployed for bandobast in containment areas.

However, if curfew is imposed, it would be in NMC limits and not in Nagpur rural area. An official told us, Since it’s a crop season now, curfew in rural area can’t be imposed. Anyway, the situation there isn’t that bad.

Our source from the NMC said, “We have to impose curfew; there’s already a spike in COVID-19 cases. People aren’t following social distancing and other COVID-19 related norms since Unlock 1.0 began. This irresponsible behaviour of people on roads, offices and in shops is going to show a further spike in a fortnight’s time. It’s extremely necessary to impose a curfew so that we can save Nagpur from community spread of COVID-19. Even Nagpur Mayor Sandip Joshi has been taken into confidence for the same and it (curfew) is going to happen with the consent of all the authorities.”

More details are awaited on the same.
