‘Deendayal Thali’ @ Rs 10 proves to be boon for needy at GMCH in COVID-19 crisis

Former Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Sancheti, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and Nagpur Mayor Sandip Joshi during the launch of ‘Deendayal Thali’ at GMCH in 2017.

The lockdown and COVID-19 crisis have pushed many people into financial troubles and the low-income group is the worst hit. At a time, when this particular class is struggling to make ends meet, Yuva Zep Pratisthans Deendayal Thali, which is available for just Rs 10 at Nagpur’s GMCH, is proving to be a blessing for patients and their relatives.

Through the affordable food initiative, which was started at GMCH in December 2017, thousands of people have been provided free meals during the lockdown. A typical Deendayal Thali consists of three chapatis, dal, sabzi and rice. The thali is served between 11 am to 3 pm everyday at GMCH.

Speaking to Nation Next, Niraj Dontulwar, a member of Yuva Zep Pratisthan, said, Amid COVID-19 lockdown from March to May 31, we provided 5,000 meals everyday to patients, relatives and people in the slums for free. However, we could not continue the free meal drive due to fewer donations. We are now providing these Deendayal thalis for Rs 10 again to patients and their relatives.

Explaining as to how the pratisthan manages to provide en entire meal for just Rs 10, Dontulwar said, There’s no specific NGO, which donates money to us. Usually the people who serve food or donate money during special occasions or death of their loved ones help us out with donations ranging between Rs 500 to Rs 10,000. One thali costs us around Rs 22 to Rs 24 and we sell it for Rs 10. We also receive donations from temples like Ganesh Tekdi.

Speaking about the conceptualization of Deendayal Thali? Dontulwar added, The scheme is spearheaded by Nagpur Mayor Sandip Joshi, who’s also the president of Yuva Zep Pratisthan. The inspiration behind the scheme came from former politician Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya, who was known to serve the poor and the needy in the best possible manner.

Dontulwar added, The patients and their relatives, who come at GMCH from outside Nagpur and Maharashtra, are charged around Rs 3000-4000 at the OPD. The relatives of these patients had to bring their own food or buy and eat raw vegetables from the market. It is to help these people that Deendayal Thali was conceptualized. Dontulwar clarified that Deendayal Thali? is an initiative of Yuva Zep Pratisthan, and has no political affiliations.

When asked if the initiative will be replicated some place other than GMCH as well, Dontulwar said, As for now, we haven’t planned anything for providing thalis in other areas. The decision as to how to more forward entirely depends on Sandipji.
