Newly elected Nagpur Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, on Thursday, at his swearing ceremony in Nagpur, said that he would clear all the backlog of former Nagpur Municipal Commissioner, Tukaram Munde and would maintain peaceful situations at Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) of the city.
Bhartiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Tiwari, became 54th Mayor of Nagpur by securing 107 votes from 149. BJP’s Manisha Dhawade, was elected as his Deputy Mayor through special online polls on January 5, at Nagpur Municipal Corporation office.
After more than two decades, Nagpur now has a Hindi-origin? Mayor, who is also a fine orator.
Addressing the people of Nagpur, he said, It was due to public support and help from organisations that NMC was able to deal with the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. They helped migrant workers with food, supplies, medicine and much more along with NMC. I’m aware of the duty, which I’m about to take on. Pending work from last two years has to be completed in one.
He further stated that 2021 was the last year before NMC would see fresh elections (2022).
He said that he was happy to receive love and affection from Nagpur since he was elected as the mayor but he was also prepared to be true to their expectations.
Gadkari-Fadanavis, saw a dream for Nagpur. They want the city to be as developed as Mumbai or Pune. As the years pass, I can say that this dream is becoming reality, he added.
Just as in Lord Shivas court, snake, rat, bull, lion and others stay together without any problems, I have Shankar in my name as well (Dayashankar), I will ensure that the scenes of last year won’t get repeated, added Tiwari.

Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray said there was a wave of andh bhakts (a term colloquially used for blind illogical followers) at the moment and people shouldn’t become andh bhakts.

Thackeray said the same while virtually releasing state cabinet minister Dr Nitin Raut’s book ‘Ambedkar on Population Policy’ on Sunday from Mumbai.

Thackeray said, “Babasaheb Ambedkar’s thoughts guide us and show us the way forward. He not only framed the Constitution but also told us the obstacles that may come up and how to overcome them. The true follower will understand the teaching of his God and spread it to all. The blind follower will only praise superficially and then sometimes change his affection.”

Raut, who was praised by Thackeray for coming up with a ‘well-researched’ book, said the government in the state should implement suggestions given by Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and initiate welfare programmes based on them.

The event was held at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall in Nagpur in the presence of Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, Professor at Indiana University in USA Dr Kevin Brown, ex-Chairman UGC and renowned economist Dr Sukhdeo Thorat apart from several other prominent leaders.
