At ‘The Nagpur Rotary-Arneja Walkathon and Dream Run 2017’ organised by the Rotary Club of Nagpur and Arneja Heart and Multi-specialty Hospital, around 8000 fitness enthusiasts participated in the Walkathon and ran for a healthier life. The Walkathon which kick started from Ramgiri, Civil Lines, Nagpur at 6am sharp was given a go ahead by All India Congress Committee Secretary Anees Ahmed, Dr Jaspal Arneja, Deepak Killedar and Baljinder Mondal. The Walkathon was organised to support various social causes and to promote and spread awareness about fitness.
Along with several professionals from Nagpur and other cities (Ahmedabad, Pune, Hyderabad, etc.), students from schools and colleges and members of many laughter clubs also participated in the Walkathon. Interestingly, a few youngsters from Kenya and Ethiopia had especially come to the city to participate in the Walkathon. While the youngest runner at the Walkathon was five-year-old Parth Gupta, the oldest runner was 92-year-old Pesho Mehta. Pesho Mehta on his jersey carried an inspiring message which read, ‘So, what if I’m 92? I can still do what others can do. Walk 3 kms in Walkathon race and shake my legs along with their space!”
Speaking to Nation Next about the Walkathon 2017, Ex-President of Rotary club of Nagpur, Dr Sanjiv Prakash Chugh said, Taking a cue from the Bombay Walkathon and with an intention to promote sports and spread fitness awareness in Nagpur we organised the first Walkathon in February, 2005 which saw a participation from around 1500 runners. Today around 8000 runners have participated in the Walkathon and that’s really great! We hope to make Nagpur Walkathon bigger and better year after year. Dr Chugh also thanked the Nagpur Traffic Police for supporting the Walkathon and helping the organisers to manage and clear traffic.
The Walkathon got over by 9 am and was followed by a prize and medal distribution ceremony in the presence of Anees Ahmed, Dr Jaspal Arneja, Alok Goenka (President, Rotary Club of Nagpur), Manish Bhati (Secretary), Rajesh Yadav (Project Director, Nagpur Walkathon 2017).
