Nagpur activists organise Tree Walk, Waste Walk to protest against felling of trees in Ajni

In a series of protests against felling of thousands of trees in Ajni for NHAIs inter-modal station project, over 200 Nagpur activists, under the banner of Save Ajni Vann, participated in Tree Walk and Waste Walk events near Ajni Railway Colony, on Sunday morning.

One of the organisers – Prachi Mahurkar – took the citizens for a walk and explained about various existing trees , their identification and utilities in Ajni area.

Nagpur Ploggers, an NGO, which conducts cleaning drives in various parts of the city every weekend, had also participated in the event. They collected around eight bags of waste from the area.

During the event, environmentalist Juhi Pandhripande also demonstrated making of Eco Brick by utilizing waste plastic through packing them in discarded bottles.

Under the guidance of Architect Sandeep Pathe, a specialist in heritage architecture, many budding architects sketched the heritage buildings and structures.

Several Nagpur bloggers were also present to procure details of the Ajni Van event ( Heritage , Tree walk and Waste walk) and get acquainted with movement to save the Ajni Van.

As our protests continue, we observe voluntary participation of more youths in our events. We are growing in numbers with every event now, and I hope we continue to grow, activist and event organiser Kunal Mourya told Nation Next.

Over 7000 trees are proposed to be cut in 44 acres of Ajni railway colony for IMS project.

Overall over 30000 trees are set to be cut for commercial complex, malls and office buildings, which would be constructed near IMS in the name of infrastructural development in the city, he said.

It is surprising to observe that even on January 1, when winter is supposed to be at it’s peak, the temperature hasn’t dropped down much in the city. Felling of trees, can be accounted as one of the major reasons for such a drastic climate change.

Imagine, if such climate change and increase in temperature persists, Nagpur may cross 50 degree Celsius mark within two or three years, he added.
