Mary Kom knocks out Nagpur Marathon runners with her simplicity and charm

Sunday morning turned out to be special for Nagpurians as Olympic bronze medalist MC Mary Kom came calling to the city for the Maha Metro Nagpur Marathon 2017 organised by Adventures and You in association with Nation Next (as the online media partner), Nagpur Runners Academy, Saraswati Vidyalaya Alumni Association (SVAA) and Indian Medical Association (IMA), Nagpur. Five-time boxing champion and Rajya Sabha MP Mary, who was in the Nagpur for the second time, was accompanied by her husband Karung Onkholer Kom. Also present at the marathon were Brijesh Dixit (Managing Director, Maha Metro), Mitesh Rambhia (Race director), Dr Vaishali Khandait (President, IMA, Nagpur), Rajkumar Tirpude (President, Yugantar Education Society), Dr Anup Marar, Jyoti Amge (World’s smallest living woman) and Mayank Sharma.

The Maha Metro Nagpur Marathon 2017 kick started at 6 am from Tirpude College ground, Civil Lines, Nagpur. Around six thousand runners participated in the marathon, which was categorized into three race categories: 5 km fun run, 10 km endurance run and 21 km half marathon. Apart from Nagpur, there was also good participation from runners across India.

As soon as Mary Kom arrived she was greeted by Nagpurians with a loud cheer and many rushed to click selfies with her. The boxing champion not only obliged her fans with selfies but also gave many autographs. Appreciating the huge participation at the marathon from Nagpurians, Mary said, Running is not only important for athletes but for everybody. It keeps you fit. It’s great that so many of you are here. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a winner or not, it’s important to finish the race to get inspired and to inspire others. Talking about how important it is to inspire each other, Mary jokingly added, My husband was a footballer but he stopped playing. He got inspired by me and started playing again and is now completely fit.

Stressing upon the need of women learning boxing, Mary said, Learning boxing is not just about winning medals. It’s about being fit and being able to defend yourself. When you know boxing you will be confident and won’t need anybody to protect you. Look at me! I don’t take anybody along when I go out. I can easily challenge 10 people for a fight! Mary also thanked her husband for supporting her in her career.

The winners and runners-up of the different race categories were awarded after Marys speech by her and other guests.

Ex-Pakistan President Parvez Musharraf dies after battling rare disease

Parvez Musharraf

Former President of Pakistan Parvez Musharraf (79) passed away in Dubai on Sunday morning after battling against a rare disease in Dubai since March 2016. Musharraf, who was undergoing treatment for amyloidosis.

It is a rare disease that occurs when an abnormal protein, called amyloid, builds up in your organs and interferes with their normal function. 

On June 10, his family had issued a statement on Twitter by saying, “He (Musharraf) is not on the ventilator. Has been hospitalized for the last 3 weeks due to a complication of his ailment (Amyloidosis). Going through a difficult stage where recovery is not possible and organs are malfunctioning. Pray for ease in his daily living.”

Musharraf was born on August 11, 1943, in Delhi and completed his early education at St Patrick’s High School in Karachi. He pursued his higher education from Forman Christian College in Lahore.

Indian cricketer Umesh Yadav had a ‘field day’ teasing his team member Shubham Gill after Tinder – a popular dating app – showed a photo of a girl with a placard on large billboards in Nagpur that read, “Shubman idhar toh dekh lo” (Shubman, have a look here).” Tinder was quick to capitalise on the joke and turn it into hoardings in Nagpur ahead of India first Test match vs Australia.

Taking to twitter, Yadav wrote, “Poora Nagpur bol raha hai, Shubman Gill ab toh dekh le.”

During India’s T20 match in Ahmedabad, a picture of a female fan holding a placard that read ‘Tinder, Shubman se match kara do” (Tinder, match me with Shubman)’ had gone viral.
