From humble beginnings to owning popular restaurant in Nagpur: Barbecue owners inspiring story

Joginder Singh

Joginder Singh

I fondly remember Joginder Uncle and Sanju starting their Barbeque on a handcart at T-point opposite NIT in Nagpur’s Sadar area around 1985-86 in the evening. Only father and the son would prepare food and serve customers, so it was literally like a चालक मालक situation.

I and my friend Vishal Sahni were regular customers at the handcart, visiting on our Bullet almost every second day after our commerce tuition at Bhaiyaji.

In few years, Barbeque shifted to a larger place – at a closed petrol pump between SFS School main gate and Bharat Furnitures on Residency Road. Even at the new place, both father and son prepared delicious barbeque snacks and serve. However by now, they had engaged a couple of employees to assist them as business grew.

Later, Barbeque shifted to place it is now on, at Mount Road in a rented place, which now the Jhans family owns and is presently under renovation to accommodate more customers.

At 87, Joginder Uncle saw his family well-settled with luxurious life; from nothing to almost everything. It is sad that COVID-19 consumed another gem of a person of Nagpur. May uncle’s soul rest in peace. I request Nagpurians to take care and stay safe.

P.S. Prepared this out of my memory. Anything I missed or if not completely correct, I may please be pardoned.

Editorial Note: The owner of Nagpur’s famous restaurant Barbecue situated at Mount Road in Sadar in Nagpur – Joginder Singh (86) – passed away on August 20 due to COVID-19.
Singh had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 11 and was later treated at Seven Star Hospital.
Singh’s son Sanju had earlier told Nation Next, “After my father experienced mild COVID-19 symptoms, we got him tested for COVID-19 and he tested positive. My father has been staying at home ever since the lockdown was first announced, so we are unsure as to how he contacted the virus.”
