Fadnavis asks CM Thackeray to intervene to stop black marketing of COVID-19 drug ‘Remdesivir’

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis

Former Maharashtra CM and current Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis has written to CM Uddhav Thackeray and asked him to intervene to stop the black marketing of COVID-19 drug Remdesivir? as high prices are leading to deaths of poor patients in the state.

Fadnavis stated that there is a huge shortage of Remedesivir in Maharashtra, which has resulted in a black marketing of the drug. As a result, poor patients are suffering and dying. Fadnavis has demanded that CM Thackeray should intervene and make sure that the drug is provided for free to poor patients in private and government hospitals.

Fadnavis stated that the state is adding around 20,000 COVID-19 cases on an average every day. The average daily death toll is 450. As Remdesivir is an important drug in treatment, it is important to ensure that its supply remains smooth. But due to non-availability of it in many districts, poor patients are suffering.

No matter how much the state government claims availability, hospitals are telling patients that the drug is not available and are being told to go directly to the chemist to buy it. Given the drugs cost (more than Rs 5,000 for one vial), it is not within the reach of the common man. As a result, the mortality rate has increased.

Fadnavis further stated that the state government has initiated an interim process for the purchase of Remdesivir. However, due to a flawed process, stockpiles of the drug purchased from several districts had to be returned, according to media reports. The result is a huge shortage. This has led to a large scale black market of the drug resulting in the suffering of the poor.

On the one hand, the death of poor patients and on the other hand, the black marketing of Remdesivir is a very serious condition. Therefore, the drug should be made available to the district administration immediately by implementing a new procurement process. Also, it should be made available free of cost to all poor patients in government as well as private hospitals.
