Mamata Banerjee likely to return as Bengal CM for 3rd consecutive term; concedes Nandigram defeat
Mamata Banerjee
Trinamool Congress swept the Bengal elections but in a cliffhanger, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost to BJP leader and her former protege Suvendhy Adhikari in the hotly-contested constituency Nandigram.
However, Banerjee said she accepted her defeat in Nandigram. She said, I accept the defeat; it’s not a big deal. Don’t worry.
The TMC is likely to win over 200 seats. The BJP, as per the Election Commission data, is leading in 79 seats currently.
Banerjee, who is likely to return as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for the third consecutive time, said, Khela hobe’ did happen, and we did win. The BJP kept going on and on about double-engine sarkar, while I assured you all that I will score a double century. This is Bangla’s win… this is Bengal’s win… this is your win. This win has saved Bengal, it has saved the culture and tradition of Bengal.
Speaking about her defeat in Nandigram, Banerjee said, Don’t worry about Nandigram. I struggled for Nandigram because I fought a movement. It is okay. Let the Nandigram people give whatever verdict they want, I accept that. I don’t mind. We won more than 221 seats and the BJP lost the election.
Meanwhile, TMC claimed that the counting for the Nandigram seat wasn’t yet complete as votes in the last round of counting were not included in the result. However, at present, Adhikari is leading by 1,957 votes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his tweet, congratulated Banerjee by saying, Congratulations to Mamata Didi for
