In one of a kind initiative, Kingsway Hospital in Nagpur has joined hands with the British Association of Physician of Indian Origin (BAPIO) to provide online consultation for COVID-19 patients registered with Kingsway. BAPIO is a 20-year-old organization with more than 50,000 Indian-origin doctors as members. Kingsway has currently 260 beds for COVID-19 patients and is also managing 180 beds at Centre Point Hotel.

Speaking about the association with BAPIO, Dr Raju Khandelwal (MD, Kingsway Institute of Health Sciences) told Nation Next: ?BAPIO aims at helping doctors and physicians in India. From time to time, they have been helping the medical fraternity in India with medical services, equipment, etc. Our association with BAPIO has been possible because of Dr Ramesh Mehta (President, BAPIO), Dr Parag Singhal (Chairman, BAPIO, Academic Wing), and Dr Prakash Khaitan (MD, Kingsway Hospitals).

Speaking as to why the unique initiative was undertaken, Dr Khandelwal said: The COVID-19 pandemic has put a lot of pressure on the medical fraternity. There’s a great shortage of consultants, RMOs (Resident Medical Doctor), and specialists. When we communicated the same to BAPIO, they were happy to help us out by doing online consultation with our patients.

Explaining how the online consultation will work, Dr Khandelwal added, Most COVID-19 patients have a fixed-line of treatment. They don’t need to be checked upon very frequently by consultants or specialists. Nurses and RMOs are the ones who check up on the patients frequently.

As part of our association with BAPIO, we are planning to allot 15-20 beds to each doctor/consultant from BAPIO. The doctor, who will be using a tab for video consultation, will coordinate with the RMO and speak with the patient during the doctor’s ?virtual round. The patient will be able to speak to the doctor about his condition or his queries. The RMOs will also present the case to the doctor with the patient’s details.

The suggestions or the treatment prescribed by the doctors will be updated in our master sheet, which will be available to Kingsway at our COVID-19 control room. It will not only help us get suggestions from out counterparts in UK but will also help us manage the patients effectively. We will also be able to ascertain through the master sheet if a patient needs consultation from a specialist.
