Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari felicitates Nagpur students selected for world record of 100 Femto satellite

Nagpur Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari, on Thursday, felicitated two students from Surendragad Hindi Madhyamik Shala government school, who have been selected among 1000 students across country for the design and development of 100 Femto Satellites, which would be launched on February 7 at Rameswaram.

The class X students; Swati Mishra and Kajal Sharma, both residents of Surendragad slum area, Nagpur, have been working since past two years to set a world record of building the lightest satellite.

The programme Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Research Payload Cubes Challenge- 2021? has been jointly organised by Space Zone India and Dr APJ Kalam International Foundation.

The aim of this programme is to guide 1000 students from classes 9 to 12 across the country, to work on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and enable them to use their knowledge and skills for the design and development of 100 Femto Satellites, which would be launched through a single high-altitude scientific balloon on February 7, 2021 at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.

Swati and Kajal were initially charged Rs 10,000 to participate for the world record. However, their fees was waived off in the view of their persistence and will of overcoming adverse conditions to achieve the goal.

The Femto Satellite developed by them, would weigh around 50 to 80 grams only, and would be 2.5 to 4 cm long. The satellite would go to an altitude of 33,000 to 38,000 meters in space and will send information about the atmosphere of the earth.

Both students are currently undergoing online training to build satellites. They would be given offline training from January 18 to 22. They are also affiliated with the international WhatsApp group SZI World Records.

The students have expressed the gratitude towards their science teacher Deepti Bist, who has contributed a lot to their success.

Bist, who works as a science teacher at Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Surendragad Hindi Madhyamik Shala, expressed her confidence in Swati and Kajal, saying that if adequate resources were made available, the students would leave their mark in space.

As a teacher, I have always strived to impart the skills of our students to raise them from Local to Global, and to bring the international education from Global to Local, Bist said.
