After almost nine months when schools were shut down in March due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the Maharashtra education department has now planned to reopen schools for grades nine to 12 from November 23, State Education Minister, Varsha Gaikwad, announced on Friday.

As reported by ANI, Gaikwad informed, We have proposed before the state government to restart classes in schools for Class 9, 10, 11 and 12 from November 23. Also, we have proposed that exams of Class 10 and Class 12 should be conducted in May, instead of February or March.”

Each year, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), conducts examinations for classes 10 and 12 in February and March respectively. But, due to the ongoing crisis of COVID-19 and incompletion of syllabus, the state government proposed to conduct the 10th and 12th boards exams in May.
Gaikwad also mentioned that since students have not been able to conduct physical classes, her priority was to get every student back on track before they appeared for their board examinations.

Due to incompletion of syllabus, because of the lockdown, Gaikwad informed, I have also discussed the issue of how much curriculum can be omitted so that teachers can complete the remaining part. We will have to cut at least 25 per cent of the curriculum.

As parents are still skeptical about sending their kids back to school, Gaikwad ensured on taking all safety precautions instructed but the central and state government. The government will ensure that appropriate measures are in place for the safety of students and teachers in schools.

Before sending their children for physical classes, parents will have to submit a no objection? application to the respective departments. Even if parents disagree, students online classes would still continue and their grades wouldn’t depend on their attendance.

Maharashtra so far has recorded, 1,02,099 active cases in the state with a recovery rate of 91.35 per cent. With 5,027 new positive cases on Saturday, COVID-19 tally in the state reached to 17,10,314 on Friday. The case fatality rate in the state is 2.63 per cent.
