Be ready to sweep roads if you fail to pay fine for not wearing mask: BMC

As the violators refuse to take COVID-19 norms seriously, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) now is making people sweep roads as a form of community service, if they fail to pay Rs 200 fine for not wearing masks in public.

According to the officials, police cases would be lodged against the violators who refuse to sweep roads. The punishment is enforced as per the BMCs Solid Waste Management Bye-Laws that permit civic body powers to ask citizens to perform various community services for spitting on roads.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of K-West Ward Vishwas Mote informed PTI that for last seven days, the authorities have made people do community service in the form of sweeping roads if they unnecessary argue with officials or refuse to pay fine for not wearing a mask.

As the festive seasons have come forth, the earlier slowed down rate of COVID-19 cases have sprung to rise again. Aiming to contain the pandemic, the civic body is continuously spreading awareness among masses about following COVID-19 norms.
