Beirut explosion heard in city 200 kms away; intensity 20% of Hiroshima atom bomb explosion
Beirut blast
The horrific explosion in Beirut in Lebanon that left over 135 dead and 5000 wounded was heard in a city 200 kilometers away in Cyprus. Despite the explosion not being nuclear in nature, people compared it with that of Hiroshima atom bomb explosion due to its intensity.
Indiatimes stated, While official numbers aren’t out yet, experts have speculated that the Beirut explosion was a three kiloton blast. When comparing the Beirut blast to the atom bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, the nuclear explosion was approximately 13 to 18 kiloton making the Beirut explosion one-fifth of the Hiroshima nuclear attack that shook Japan and the world in World War II.”
The Beirut blast wave reportedly crossed over 1.6 kilometres thus shattering windows in its way. Such was the intensity of the blast that the damage was witnessed up to at least 10 kilometres away from the epicentre.
According to authorities, a massive shipment of agricultural fertilizer was stored in the port of Beirut without safety precautions for years despite warnings by the local officials that eventually led to the explosion.
