Still paying for oil bonds issued by Congress govt: Nirmala Sitharaman on high fuel prices
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman
Dismissing any possibility of cutting excise duty on petrol and diesel as of now, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday that the current government is still paying for the oil bonds issued by the Congress government.
Sitharaman said: “If I had not incurred the UPA’s oil bonds worth over Rs 1. 4 lakh crore, I would have given relief from petroleum prices.” For the uninitiated, to keep fuel prices in check, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had issued oil bonds – or instruments in lieu of cash subsidy to oil marketing companies – that are up for redemption now.
Sitharaman added: “Our government is paying for the UPA government’s trickery. UPA issued oil bonds for which principal amount is over Rs 1 lakh crore and for the last 7 fiscals, the government has been paying over Rs 9000 crore interest annually.”
Meanwhile, the Congress has denied that oil bond payments are to be blamed for the centre’s claimed inability of giving relief to people. Amitabh Dubey, president of the Delhi chapter of Professionals’ Congress, said that that PM Modi’s government had, in the six-week period between May and June alone, increased fuel prices by Rs 7 per litre.
