Singapore researchers develop breath test that can detect COVID-19 in one minute

Researchers at National University of Singapore (NUS) have developed a breath test, which can detect COVID-19 in just a minute. As part of the test, a person simply needs to blow in a disposable mouthpiece connected to a high precision breath sampler? to find out he has contracted the virus. The technology has been developed by NUS startup Breathonix.
After the person exhales, his exhaled breathe is collected and fed into a mass spectrometer for measurement. A machine learning software then analyses the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) profile in a persons breath and generates the result in less than a minute.

NUS informed through a statement that the test achieved more than 90% accuracy in a clinical trail involving 180 patients. Breathonix CEO Dr Jia Zhunan said, Different diseases cause specific changes to the compounds, resulting in detectable changes in a persons breath profile. As such, VOCs can be measured as markers for diseases like COVID-19.
Nagpur’s COVID-19 tally, on Tuesday, January 25, reached 5,43,064 (till 5 pm) as 4028 (972 from rural and 2956 from city) new cases were recorded in a single day.
Also, active COVID cases, as on Tuesday, could be seen inching closer to 30,000 mark in the district.
Nagpur’s COVID-19 tally on Sunday, January 2 reached 4,94,193 (till 5 pm) as 90 (73 city, nine rural) more people tested positive for the virus.
Nagpur registered 88 (81 from city) new COVID-19 positive cases on Friday, December 31. Nagpur previously had recorded as minimum as six cases on December 24.
