Scientists reveal why the 56,000-year-old Lonar Lake in Buldhana turned pink overnight

Many were left baffled when the 56,000-year-old Lonar Crater Sanctuary Lake at Buldhana district in Maharashtra had turned pink overnight in June. The lake is known to be world’s largest basaltic impact crater, which was formed when a meteorite or asteroid hit Earth around 56,000 years ago.
A team of scientists from the Nagpur-based National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) had also visited the Lonar Lake to collect water samples for analysis.
Director at Pune-based Agharkar Research Institute Dr Prashant Dhakephalkar said the change in the colour of water was due to a large presence of the salt-loving Haloarchaea? microbes.
He told PTI, Initially, we thought it was because of the red- pigmented Dunaliella algae due to which the water might have turned pink. But during the investigation of the lake water samples, we found the water turned pink due to the large presence of Haloarchaea population in the lake.
Dr Dhakephalkar also said that it could be assumed that the absence of rain, less human interference and high temperature also resulted in the evaporation of water that increased the lakes salinity and pH. The scientist said the colour of the lake was now returning to its original colour due to monsoon as the rainwater allows dilution of the lake water.
He added, So basically, it was the biomass of these microbes and because of that the surface of the water turned red or pink and as soon as the biomass subsided, the colour disappeared.
Dhakephalkar said incidentally, they also came across an interesting finding vis-à-vis flamingos that visit the lake. He told PTI, This bacteria, which produces a pink pigment, is ingested by these birds and they get carotenoid-rich food, because of that, their plumage (feathers) is pink in colour. So before we noticed it (colour of the lake), these flamingos might have noticed the red colour at the lake and landed there.

Pune police have arrested a Gujarat-based businessman for using his wife’s Aadhaar card to check into a hotel in Pune with his girlfriend. The police acted after a complaint by his wife. A police official informed that a case was registered against the businessman at Hinjewadi police station in Pune on Tuesday (February 1).
As per the police, the man’s wife who stays in Gujarat and is a director in his company, suspected her husband of having an affair. A police official said: “The wife had fitted a GPS tracker in her husband’s SUV. In November last year, when he told her about his business trip to Bengaluru, she checked his location and found that the car was at a Pune hotel.
When the wife contacted the hotel, the staff informed her that the man had checked in with his wife. On further enquiry, the real wife found out that her husband had checked into the hotel with another woman (posing as his wife), using the real wife’s Aadhaar card. The wife later lodged a complaint with the police.

Ghosts exist; I got rid of evil spirits through chants, claims IIT Mandi director
Laxmidhar Behera
A statement by the newly-appointed IIT Mandi director Laxmidhar Behera claiming that ghosts exists and that he has gotten ‘rid of evil spirits’ through chants has sparked a controversy.
In a five minute YouTube video clip, which has now been made private, Behera recounts how he had travelled to Chennai in 1993 to help a friend who was in distress as his family was ‘affected by ghosts.’ In the video, he is heard saying that he had started ‘practising the thoughts and wisdom in the Bhagavad Gita’ along with chanting the Hare Rama Hare Krishna? mantra and had decided to help his friend to ‘demonstrate the potency of the holy name.’
Recalling the incident, Behera added in the clip: “So I took two of my friends and reached at 7 pm. He was in a research scholar apartment. After 10-15 minutes of loud chanting we suddenly saw his father, who was a very short person, absolutely old, barely able to walk, and suddenly his hand and leg washe was creating such a ghastly dance and his head is almost touching the roof. You could feel that he is being completely devoured by the evil spirit.”
Behera also claimed that the mother and wife of the friend were later ‘possessed by the evil spirit.’ It took them around 45 minutes to an hour of loud chanting to ward off the ‘evil spirit.’
When The Indian Express asked Behera about the video, he said, “I narrated what I said. Ghosts exist, yes.” while adding that modern science cannot explain a lot of occurrences or events.
As per reports, Behera was previously a professor at IIT Kanpur in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His specialisations include robotics and artificial intelligence. He has completed 30 projects, has 307 publications, and 2,612 citations. He was earlier heading the Intelligent Systems and Control Laboratory at IIT Kanpur. He has been associated with IIT Kanpur since 2001, before which he was associated with BITS-Pilani and REC-Rourkela.
