‘Omicron’ less severe than Delta, existing COVID vaccines can fight it: WHO

Amid rising global tension over the newly emerged variant of COVID-19, Omicron, the World Health Organisation declared that Omicron is not severe than Delta and the existing vaccines could fight it.
Along with WHO, Dr Anthony Fauci, who is a top scientist attached to the Federal government of the United States, vouched for this particular study and said that the existing vaccines have the power to fight Omicron.
As per the data given by the Central government, 23 Omicron cases were reported in India. Among those reported cases, Maharashtra had the highest number.
There is no reason to assume that Omicron is more severe than the variants which came before, or that existing vaccines will fail against it, said a top WHO official.
Michael Ryan, the World Health Organisation’s Emergencies Director, in an interview, said, Currently there is no indication to suggest that Omicron, although highly infectious, causes a more severe disease than previous COVID-19 variants such as Delta.
The existing vaccines should protect people who contract Omicron against the worst outcomes of the disease, he added.
