Ahead of Diwali, Nagpur Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B warned of imposing a second lockdown if shopkeepers and citizens continued to show reluctance in following COVID-19 protocols especially during festivities.

The festive season has become a matter of grave concern for the citys administration, as earlier on Sunday, hundreds of Nagpurians were seen thronging markets at Sitabuldi, Itwari, Mahal, etc, thus callously flouting COVID-19 norms.

NMC Commissioner, on Monday, chaired a meeting with city traffic police, NMC’s Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) and several enforcement agencies, in order to discuss the prevention of over-crowding in commercial areas in COVID-19.

A fine of Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000 would be imposed on the citizens and shopkeepers who do not maintain social distancing and wear masks, NMC Commissioner said during the meeting.

If people in Nagpur ignore rules, a second lockdown would be imposed soon, he said adding that a second wave of COVID-19 is predicted to hit many cities by the year-end.

In order to maintain COVID-19 protocols, the DCP (traffic) has also decided to make Sitabuldi market a no-vehicle zone? from 4pm to 10pm and parking arrangements would be made at nearby open spaces.

Zonal DCP and teams would be deployed in the following areas to ensure crowd management and also prevent theft and molestation.

1) 45 civic cops at Sitabuldi Market

2) 33 civic cops at Itwari, Mahal and Gandhibagh areas

3) 35 civic cops at Kamal Chowk and Jaripatka

4) 20 civic cops at Kirana Oli, Reshim Oli and Bhandara Road Market
