Nagpur: Husband, wife succumb to COVID-19 on same day; only son misses last rites after testing positive

In an extremely tragic incident, a man and his wife, both in their 60s, passed away due to COVID-19 on the July 20. While the man passed away at a private hospital, the woman passed away at their home in Pushpanjali Apartment in Nagpur’s Reshimbagh area. The couples only son could not even see his parents for the last time during their last rites as he also tested positive for the virus and was admitted to GMCH on July 21.

The man, who owned a footwear shop in Itwari, was reportedly unwell from the past week. The family, including the man, the woman and the son, over the week developed COVID-19 symptoms. On July 20, as the man’s condition worsened at his apartment, he was shifted to a private hospital where a COVID-19 test was conducted. The man’s wife and his son were also tested for coronavirus. Both of them also tested positive for the virus.

Even as the man became critical at the hospital, his wifes health also deteriorated at their home. When a doctor arrived at the home, he declared the wife dead at around midnight. Soon after, the man also passed away. The woman’s body was kept at the apartment throughout the night and was taken away by NMC officials in morning. Both the husband and the wife were cremated by civic officials.

On July 21, NMC officials reached the apartment, which consists of 80 flats. The wing where the deceased stayed and the entire apartment were sanitized and around 40 residents were shifted to quarantine facility at VNIT. Moreover, around 50 antigen tests were conducted on senior citizens and people with co-morbidities. Out of these tests, a middle-aged man (who came in direct contact with the deceased man) turned out to be positive and was shifted to GMCH.

This is probably the first time in Nagpur where COVID-19 has claimed multiple lives from the same family.
