Less than 10% people in world have COVID-19 antibodies: WHO

Soumya Swaminathan

The World Health Organization (WHO) Chief Sceintist Dr Soumya Swaminathan, on Sunday, estimated that less than 10% of the global population had antibodies to the COVID-19.

Less than 10% of the world’s population actually has antibodies to this virus (COVID-19). Of course in some settings, like particularly in the very high density urban settlements, there are pockets where 50-60 % of the population has been exposed to the virus and has antibodies, Swaminathan said in an interview with WHO Communications Director Gabby Stern on COVID-19 vaccines and variants.

But that doesn’t mean that the whole city, province or the state or the country is now achieving herd immunity. The same individuals who are living in that community, the moment they go outside to a place where there is less herd immunity, and if they don’t have antibodies, they will then become susceptible. The only way to achieve mass herd immunity at that scale is through vaccination, Swaminathan said.

According to Swaminathan, the currently approved COVID-19 vaccines offer good protection against severe disease, hospitalization and death from the virus. The vaccines effectiveness with regard to mild disease and asymptomatic COVID-19 infection is still being studied.
