Mahesh Agarwal, the owner of Haldiram Bhujiyawala (Pratik Food Products), Kolkata, died in Singapore on Friday after suffering from critical liver ailment. Agarwal, who was undergoing a treatment in a hospital there since three months, was to turn 57 on Saturday. Reportedly, since the country is supposed to go in for a lockdown from Tuesday, a flight would be arranged for Agarwals family as well as stranded Indians in Singapore who would been flown to Delhi on wee hours of Wednesday.

Agarwal was suffering from a critical liver ailment and was flown in to Singapore in January for a transplant. Even through the surgery was successful, he had developed an infection. Hence, Agarwal was shifted from an ICU to a high dependency unit. Since Agarwal died of an infection, the family was told not to take any risk vis-à-vis his last rites. His body would be sealed in a plastic bag along with the tracheostomy tubes that he was carrying. He would be put inside an electric incinerator. It has been said the family had to cremate the body on Friday itself, as Singapore doesn’t follow a Hindu cremation system.

Agarwal is survived by wife Meena, three daughters Avni, Anchal and Antara and a son Pratik.
