India to supply 5 lakh doses of Covishield to Canada
PM Justin Trudeau and PM Narendra Modi
After receiving a call from Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved a supply of five lakh doses of Covishield vaccine for Canada in February.
?Was happy to receive a call from my friend Justin Trudeau. Assured him that India would do its best to facilitate supplies of COVID vaccines sought by Canada. We also agreed to continue collaborating on other important issues like Climate Change and the global economic recovery, Modi tweeted on Wednesday.
During the call, Trudeau discussed global economy recovery after the pandemic and challenges posed by climate change. He also assured safety and security to Indian missions and diplomats in Canada against the protest.
Later on Wednesday, PM Trudeaus office released a readout of his conversation with PM Modi, which read, Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
The two leaders had an exchange on their respective efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, protect the health and safety of their people, and provide economic support for their citizens. Prime Minister Trudeau and Prime Minister Modi spoke about India’s significant efforts in promoting vaccine production and supply, which have provided vital support to countries around the world.
The two leaders agreed to work together on access to vaccines. The leaders also recognized the need for continued global coordination to respond to the pandemic and to promote recovery.
The two prime ministers reaffirmed their common interests in a free and open Indo-Pacific, and the importance of working together on global challenges such as climate change, strengthening global trade, and reinforcing the rules-based international order. The leaders discussed Canada and India’s commitment to democratic principles, recent protests, and the importance of resolving issues through dialogue. They underlined the need to work collectively in rebuilding a more sustainable and resilient global economy.
The leaders underscored the importance of the Canada-India strategic partnership anchored in shared values, strong people-to-people ties, and growing bilateral economic cooperation. The two leaders looked forward to working together at the G7, G20, and other international forums.
You would have seen the readouts from both sides on the farmers protest, Prime Minister Trudeau commended efforts of India to chose the path of dialogue as befitting in democracy. He also acknowledges the responsibility of his government in providing protection to Indian personnel and premises in Canada, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said in a media briefing.
However, his statements on farmers protest seem contradictory in comparison to his earlier statements he had made, while expressing his concern in the regard.
The situation is concerning and we are all very worried about family and friends. Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protest, Trudeau had said.

Active COVID cases near 30,000 mark in Nagpur
Nagpur’s COVID-19 tally, on Tuesday, January 25, reached 5,43,064 (till 5 pm) as 4028 (972 from rural and 2956 from city) new cases were recorded in a single day.
Also, active COVID cases, as on Tuesday, could be seen inching closer to 30,000 mark in the district.
