As per a panel appointed by the government, India’s COVID-19 peak is a thing of the past. The COVID-19 cases in the country had earlier started rising to over 97,000 cases per day as compared to 60,000 cases per day as of now.
The panel that comprises members of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) claimed that if proper safety measures are followed, by end of February 2021, we could bring the pandemic under control with minimum active cases.
The committee concluded that India had already crossed its peak in mid September.
However, the panel also warned that there would be a possible spike in the COVID-19 cases due to festivities and the onset of winter.
TOI quoted M Vidyasagar from IIT, who is heading the committee, by saying, If there was no lockdown, we would have had a peak that was 15 times higher in the middle of June, which would have been overwhelming. By enforcing the lockdown in March, we not only reduced the load on our system but also pushed the peak to September from the projected May-end.
The panel said the total number of infections due to COVID-19 by the time the pandemic reaches its slowest point? could be about 1.05 crore as compared to the current figure of 75 lakh.
