India’s COVID-19 pandemic is now world’s fastest growing: Report

As per a report in The New York Times, India’s COVID-19 pandemic is now world’s fastest growing in terms of caseload per day. India is now recording more than 75,000 cases per day.

The report states that the reasons behind the increase in cases can be attributed to crowded cities, lockdown fatigue and lack of contact tracing. The report quoted health experts saying that the virus reproduction rate in India is increasing as more state governments are loosening lockdown restrictions to revive the economy.

Dr Anant Bhan, a health researcher at Melaka Manipal Medical College, said: ?Everything right now is indicating toward a massive surge in the caseload in coming days. What is more worrying is we are inching toward the No 1 spot globally.

Dr Bhan noted that during the strict lockdown, which was implemented from March to May, most of the COVID-19 cases were concentrated in urban areas. However, as the travel restrictions were lifted after that many people started moving from urban areas to rural areas, thereby taking the virus with them.

Till now, India has recorded more than 3.4 million cases and is at the third place after USA (6m cases) and Brazil (3.81m cases). India’s current daily increase in COVID-19 cases is substantially higher than USA and Brazil, which are currently recording 40,000 to 50,000 cases per day. More than 62,000 people have lost their lives till now in India due to COVID-19. In terms of death as well India is at the third place after USA (1,84,000 deaths) and Brazil (1,20,000 deaths).

It is to be noted that one big reason for the rise in the cases is that more tests are being done in India now. India is now conducting 1 million tests per day compared to 2,00,000 tests a day two months ago.
