As per a new research, published in the journal Science Immunology, people who have recovered from COVID-19 have immunity against reinfection for at least eight months.

The study provides strong evidence for the likelihood that vaccinations against COVID-19 would also work for longer time period.

According to previous research and studies, it was found that patients who recovered from COVID-19 possessed antibodies for first few months of infection.

As per scientists including those from Monash University in Australia, specific cells within the immune system known as memory B cells remember the infection caused by the virus.

If the person is again exposed to the virus, these cells trigger a protective immune response though rapid production of productive antibodies.

“These results are important because they show, definitively, that patients infected with the Covid-19 virus do in fact retain immunity against the virus and the disease,” PTI quoted co-author Menno van Zelm, from the Monash University Department of Immunology and Pathology.

It further quoted Zelm by saying, This has been a black cloud hanging over the potential protection that could be provided by any Covid-19 vaccine and gives real hope that, once a vaccine or vaccines are developed, they will provide long-term protection.
