Facebook to stop recommending political groups to users for a long term: Mark Zuckerberg

Post US Capitol violence, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday, announced that the company would stop recommending civic and political groups to it’s users for a long term, in order to turn down the temperature and discourage divisive conversations and communities .

Sharing the concluded decisions to be implemented by the company, followed by the discussions with analysts about Facebook’s earnings, Zuckerberg posted on his official Facebook handle, I just shared our community update and quarterly results. There are four big themes I’m focused on for the year ahead: communities, private messaging, commerce tools for small businesses, and building the next computing platform.

In the message, Zuckerberg mentioned that, currently, the companys focus has been to make sure that the communities people connected with were healthy and positive.

We need to make sure that the communities people connect with are healthy and positive, and that’s something we’ve been focused on for a while now, he said.

One way of course that we do this is by taking down groups that break our rules against things like violence or hate speech. In September, we shared that we had removed more than 1 million groups in the last year alone. But there are also a lot of groups that we may not want to encourage people to join, even if they don’t violate our policies.

So for example, we stopped recommending civic and political groups in the US ahead of the elections. We’re continuing to fine tune how this works, but now we plan to keep civic and political groups out of recommendations for the long term, and we plan to expand that policy globally, Zuckerberg said.

To be clear, this is a continuation of work we’ve been doing for a while to turn down the temperature and discourage divisive conversations and communities, he added.

Further, he also said that the company was considering measures they could take to reduce the amount of political content in News Feed as well.

Now, along these same lines, we’re currently considering steps we could take to reduce the amount of political content in News Feed as well. We’re still working through exactly the best ways to do this, he said.

And to be clear, of course we’ll still enable people to engage in political groups and discussions if they want to. These can often be important and helpful. They can be ways to organize grassroots movements, speak out against injustice, or learn from people with different perspectives.

So we want these discussions to be able to keep happening. But one of the top pieces of feedback we’re hearing from our community right now is that people don’t want politics and fighting to take over their experience on our services, he added.

An elderly couple was mauled by a tiger in Chor Bawali on January 25 while on their way from Narsinghpur (Madhya Pradesh) to Nagpur on January 25. The couple was accompanied by their 25-year-old son in a car. Following the tiger attack, the couple was admitted to Kingsway Hospital in Nagpur.

While on their way to Nagpur, the family of three stopped near Chor Bawali for passing urine. When the 58-year-old woman got out of the car, the tiger, which was probably wounded by a previous vehicular assault, caught hold of the woman’s hand and bit her thumb. When the woman’s husband stepped out of the car to help his wife, the tiger attacked him as well and injured his right leg. A terrfied son started throwing stones at the tiger, who eventually ran away.

The couple was given first aid by the bystanders before being driven to Nagpur by the son to Kingsway hospital. Speaking to Nation Next, treating surgeon Dr Prakash Jain informed that the family was terrified when it arrived at the hospital. Dr Jain said: “The couple is now stable. Tiger mauling is always serious. The couple was lucky to have sustained minor injuries in the incident.”
