Even as the number of COVID-19 cases in India cross the one crore mark, Union Territory Lakshadweep has managed to remain coronavirus free.

The present status of Lakshadweep remaining COVID-19 free, even after ten months of the COVID-19 outbreak in India, can be attributed to precautions and timely quarantine.

Residents on all islands of the archipelago are allowed to travel between their islands to only Kochi, and that too for emergencies. Non-Lakshadweep residents are not allowed to travel to the islands.

Islanders who go to Kochi have to strictly observe 10-day quarantine at Kochi before being allowed to board a ship back to a Lakshadweep island. The administration has arranged for both paid and institutional quarantine for islanders in Kochi.

On the 7th day, the residents have to undergo a COVID-19 test. If they test negative, they are allowed to go to their island where they have to additionally quarantine themselves for five days. If they test positive, they have to avail treatment at Kochi and go through quarantine process again on recovery.

Mohammad Faizal PP, NCP MP from Lakshadweep, told TOI: We have testing facilities in at least five islands so that even if someone shows any symptoms, they can be tested immediately. I am proud to say that we are the only place in India where schools are open. Children are encouraged to wear masks and to keep sanitation.
