COVID-19: Over 10,000 attend preachers funeral in Assam, three villages sealed

Three villages in Nagaon district of Assam have been sealed after thousands attended the funeral of a well-known preacher Khairul Islam Mufti on July 2 amid COVID-19 lockdown. Mufti was the vice president of the All India Jamiat Ulema and Amir-e-Shairat for the Northeast.

As per district administration, more that 10,000 people were present during the funeral. The incident came to light, after the preachers Islams son, Aminul Islam, an MLA of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) from Nagaons Dhing area uploaded the photos of mass gathering on his social media handle.

According to Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Jadav Saikia, two police cases have been filed. The first case has been registered by the police and another case has been filed by a magistrate. Saikia told a daily: There were no law and order issues in the gathering. But the gatherers violated the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic laws in accord with the huge gathering, ignoring social distancing and not wearing masks, etc. The cases are not against any individual but against violators at large. We will investigate the case and proceed as per law.
Aminul told a daily that his father was a very renowned figure and had a very large following. The family had communicated to the administration about the death and the funeral. Accordingly, to limit the number of participants, the, police had also asked many vehicles to revert back, however, people still found ways to turn up, he said.
